Nick Lachey Explains the 2022 Total Relief Live Fundraiser and Reflects on His MTV Career

The return of live music in 2021 was cause for celebration, and in the early summer months, artists announced and began embarking on massive tours that felt like both homecomings and long-awaited returns to form for fans all over the world. However, the coronavirus's pernicious effects continue to pose a threat to the live-music industry, causing many tours to be amended, shortened, or canceled entirely.

This adds to the industry's stress, which began in 2020 when the pandemic began and has only gotten worse over time. Many people, including road crews and venue staff, rely on those shows for a living in addition to the artists. Nick Lachey, who has been touring with his band 98 Degrees this summer, had an idea to help alleviate the stress.
"Food and security in this country have always been an issue, and never more so than right now, in the aftermath of this pandemic," the singer recently stated on MTV's Fresh Out Live. "So I figured what better way to rally and try to do something about it than to set up this fundraiser?"

What he came up with, in collaboration with MTV, Live Nation, Larry Rudolph, and Johnny Wright, is Total Relief Live, a live concert event to benefit Feeding America and Crew Nation, a fund established to assist live-music crews. Its name alludes to Total Request Live, aka TRL, MTV's flagship countdown show on which his band appeared.

The show promises to transport viewers back to the TRL era, which lasted from 1998 to 2008, by bringing together some of the biggest artists of the time. It will take place at The Forum in Los Angeles in January 2022.

Lachey recalled one of his favorite TRL memories, in which he and fellow 98 Degrees member Jeff Timmons co-hosted the show on a day when the scheduled guests were Mariah Carey, LL Cool J, and Christina Aguilera. "We were thrown into the fire, trying to interview these three iconic artists, and I think we pretty much blew it," he admitted. "But, wow, that was a really cool experience," she says.
