Michelle Obama's Most Inappropriate Outfits

Everyone understands how difficult it is to be a royal, with all of the rules and etiquette requirements. However, few people consider how difficult it is to be a member of the United States' first family, particularly the first lady. According to The New York Times, protocol dictates what the first ladies can and cannot wear. "No one just decides one day that this is what I'm going to wear," explained Capricia Penavic Marshall, the United States' chief of protocol from 2009 to 2013. "Everything that ends up on a first lady's body, from T-shirts to earrings, is carefully chosen to be in line with etiquette and screened for potential cultural and political implications — but sometimes, someone makes a mistake.

According to Elle, Michelle Obama discussed her first lady style in her book Becoming, writing, "I tried to be somewhat unpredictable, to prevent anyone from ascribing any sort of message to what I wore. It was a thin line to walk." A thin line she crossed a few times. Here are the most inappropriate outfits worn by Michelle Obama, whether on purpose or by accident.

Michelle Obama wore shoes worth $540 to a food bank.

Casual is one thing, but first lady casual is another. According to CBS News, Michelle Obama left the White House to volunteer at a food bank in Washington, D.C. in May of 2009, dressed in a J. Crew argyle cardigan, khaki capri pants, and $540 Lanvin sneakers. The shoes, which are dark grey suede with metallic pink toe caps and ribbon laces, are quite stylish and sold well during that spring season. They were even favored by celebrities such as Kanye West and Ellen DeGeneres. So, what was the issue?

Some people were outraged that Obama wore such expensive sneakers to a food bank, as if she were flaunting her success and status. What did the first lady have to say about the situation? According to the New York Daily News, her representatives responded, "They're shoes," to which Maggie Rodriguez from The Early Show retorted, "But they're expensive shoes."
