Bongbong Marcos mourns death of ‘visionary leader’ Shinzo Abe
MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. described former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe as a "visionary leader who saw Japan through its most difficult times."
Marcos made the remark while mourning the death of Abe, who was shot during a campaign stop in Nara, Japan.
"I learned of the passing of former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo with shock and deep sadness," Marcos wrote on Facebook.
“Mr. Abe was a visionary leader who guided Japan through difficult times. He was a devoted friend and supporter of the Philippines, and it was under his leadership that Filipino-Japanese relations truly flourished," he added.
Marcos recalled Abe's "decisive and effective assistance" to the Philippines over the years.
"On behalf of the Philippine government and the Filipino people, among whom he has many friends and admirers," Marcos said, "I express my heartfelt condolences to his family and the entire Japanese nation."
"The decisive and effective assistance he extended to the Philippines, as well as the warmth he demonstrated in the numerous visits he made to our country, will never be forgotten," he added.
According to Reuters, a man opened fire on Abe from behind with an apparent homemade gun.
